The March for Science (MFS) is a hybrid non-profit grassroots organization that empowers a global community of science supporters for nonpartisan advocacy in service of equitable and effective science and science policy.


Role Description


MFS is seeking a motivated, ambitious professional to serve as our Executive Director. The incoming Executive Director will play a lead role in shaping the continued transition of MFS from a moment to a movement, maintaining a strong central organization in service of an ever-growing network of community organizers, partners, and supporters advocating for science for the common good.


The Executive Director will be responsible for the leadership, fundraising and management of the organization according to the strategic direction set with the Board of Directors. They will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for the March for Science staff, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission.






  • Work with board to develop strategic vision for the organization and movement and lead March for Science to achieve those goals.
  • Responsible for communicating effectively with the board and ensuring they have all information necessary to make informed decisions.
  • Regularly measure and evaluate MFS efforts against goals for the organization to ensure that they are consistent with these goals and make corrections and expansion as needed.
  • Nurture a healthy staff culture that is mission-focused, dynamic, and communicative.
  • represent MFS nationally with media, community partners, and other allies in science advocacy and movement building. Serve as a spokesperson to the MFS network, supporters, and the media.



  • Responsible for the fiscal integrity of March for Science.
  • Manage monthly and annual budget, ensure that the organization operates within the approved budget and is sustainable.
  • Fundraise and develop other resources necessary to support the mission including fostering relationships with foundations, drafting and submitting grant applications, and developing contacts with high impact donors.



  • Primary staff liaison to Board of Directors, ensuring operational efficacy in organizational policies and practice.
  • Engage with board on strategic planning regarding organizational structure, financial health, governance, priorities, and vision.
  • Works with board and staff to ensure that all programs are consistent with the strategic vision of MFS.
  • Responsible for implementing programs to ensure that the organization and network act in the best interest of the movement.
  • Serve as liaison with legal counsel and accountant. Manage all contracts.
  • Work closely with satellite organizers as key stakeholders for the organization.
  • Empower the community organizers and grassroots March for Science movement to mobilize for change.
  • Oversee marketing and communication efforts.



The March for Science is a diverse organization, coordinating with a wide network of community organizers and partners. The ideal candidate will have experience with both grassroots movements and non-profit structures. A background in science and science policy is essential but we do not expect any incoming member of the team to have expertise in all areas -- a willingness (and enthusiasm) for collaborating with experts is critical to success in this role. Applicants should have a passion for (and, preferably, a background in) centering diversity and inclusion in the organization and movement.

  • Strong organizational skills including program development
  • Ability to both lead and work as a member of the team. Wherever possible, the March for Science organization operates with a flat, collaborative structure. The ED must be able to empower all team members (within the organization and the network), not simply lead from above.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Possesses a high level of intersectional/social awareness and a continual desire to grow in understanding of other perspectives and identities
  • A willingness to roll up your sleeves and join in on any tasks necessary -- that means that some days will find you running high level meetings with CEOs in the morning and manually updating a mailing list in the afternoon.
  • Ability to oversee and collaborate with a diverse group of volunteers, staff, and partners.
  • Experience in fundraising -- grant writing a plus
  • Experience with grassroots movements preferred
  • Technological savvy. The March for Science is an entirely remote organization and a familiarity with Google Suites and Slack is required to function in the role. Experience managing remote teams preferred.
