The statement warns that scientific evidence is being dismissed across a wide range of disciplines. It also expresses concern about human-caused climate disruption in light of the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris climate accord.
Established in 1863 by Congress and signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln, the NAS is a private, nonprofit society that includes almost 500 Nobel Prize winners. The NAS itself has not endorsed or promoted the new statement, which was released by the signatories just ahead of the academy’s 155th annual meeting.
The full statement and its supporters, who signed on as individuals and not on behalf of NAS or their institutions, can be found on an independent website. The signatories include many physical scientists and climate researchers, as well as others from the biological and social sciences.
