The Department of the Interior (DOI) is seeking comments regarding its draft list of minerals deemed critical for national security or economic prosperity.  Specifically, the DOI wants comments about its rationale for the list and whether any minerals should be added or subtracted from the list.  The minerals listed by the DOI like rare earth metals are widely used in high-tech industries—especially the defense and aerospace industries—and nanoscience research.  For example, nano-yttrium, a rare earth metal, is used in research for biomolecular detection and doping photonic crystals.

The draft list of critical minerals and more information is available at the Federal Register.
