Comment Deadline: APHIS Proposed Rule, Importation, Interstate Movement, and Environmental Release of Certain Genetically Engineered Organisms

The Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is soliciting public comment on its proposed rule, "Importation, Interstate Movement, and Environmental Release of Certain Genetically Engineered Organisms." This rule would revise APHIS's regulations regarding the importation, interstate movement, and environmental release of certain genetically engineered organisms in order to update the regulations in response to advances in genetic engineering and understanding of the plant pest and noxious weed risk posed by genetically engineered (GE) organisms, thereby reducing burden for regulated entities whose organisms pose no plant pest or noxious weed risks. This would be the first comprehensive revision of the regulations since they were established in 1987.

More information about the proposed rule and instructions about how to submit a comment are available via the Federal Register notice. Note: the original comment deadline was April 19, 2017, but has been extended to June 19, 2017, per this Federal Register notice.
